Energy: Workshop addresses Electricity Demand Management during Peak Hours

GIS – 22 September 2025: A half-day workshop on Peak Demand Management, organised by the Central Electricity Board (CEB) in collaboration with Business Mauritius (BM), opened, this morning, at the Caudan Arts Centre in Port Louis. The workshop forms part of the CEB’s ongoing efforts to promote the adoption of the renewable energy in Mauritius and engage in energy saving initiatives.

The Chairman of the Energy Efficiency Management Office and Mauritius Renewable Energy Agency, Professor Khalil Elahee; the Chief Executive Officer of BM, Mr Kevin Ramkaloan, as well as several stakeholders of the public and private sectors, were present.

Presentations were delivered by Professor Elahee and representatives of the CEB namely, Mr Damodar Doseeah and Mr Mahesh Dayal, on ongoing projects and the management of load at peak time.

Professor Elahee underlined the importance of bringing all stakeholders together on a common platform to encourage dialogue, exchange best practices, and reflect on both opportunities and challenges in energy management. He further stressed the need to cultivate a culture of energy efficiency through awareness, capacity-building, and coordinated initiatives, while urging stakeholders to collaborate on a comprehensive plan to reinforce the resilience of the energy sector.

In a statement, Mr Doseeah spoke of the challenges faced by the CEB in meeting the rising demands of energy during peak hours that is from 18 00hrs to 21 30hrs. He noted that earlier this year, electricity consumption reached a record high of 567.9 megawatts.

This situation, he observed, will make it difficult for the CEB to respond to the demand, requiring strategies like load shedding as a last resort. He urged the business community and the population at large to adopt a change of mindset, calling on them to avoid using high-energy equipment during peak hours to help ease the strain on the grid.
